hold fast to your dreams

i have a dream today。

i have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together。

wow, what a dream it has been for martin luther king。 but the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes i personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams。

however, we meed dreams。 they nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality。 they keep us going。 most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great。 when we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant。 now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality。 however, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions。 well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it。 don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future。 through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it。

hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly。 hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow。 so my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams。 whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today。

it is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness by pursuing it. this is only true if you pursue it unwisely. gamblers at monte carlo are pursuing money, and most of them lose it instead, but there are other ways of pursuing money which often succeed. so it is with happiness. if you pursue it by means of drink, you are forgetting the hang-over. epicurus pursued it by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread, supplemented by a little cheese on feast days. his method proved successful in his case, but he was a valetudinarian, and most people would need something more vigorous. for most people, the pursuit of happiness, unless supplemented in various ways, is too abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life. but i think that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not, except in rare and heroic cases, be incompatible with happiness.

there are a great many people who have all the material conditions of happiness, i.e. health and a sufficient income, and who, nevertheless, are profoundly unhappy. in such cases it would seem as if the fault must lie with a wrong theory as to how to live. in one sense, we may say that any theory as to how to live is wrong. we imagine ourselves more different from the animals than we are. animals live on impulse, and are happy as long as external conditions are favorable. if you have a cat it will enjoy life if it has food and warmth and opportunities for an occasional night on the tiles. your needs are more complex than those of your cat, but they still have their basis in instinct. in civilized societies, especially in english-speaking societies, this is too apt to be forgotten. people propose to themselves some one paramount objective, and restrain all impulses that do not minister to it. a businessman may be so anxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and private affections. when at last he has become rich, no pleasure remains to him except harrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example. many rich ladies, although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure in literature or art, decide to be thought cultured, and spend boring hours learning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written to give delight, not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism.

if you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy, you will see that they all have certain things in common. the most important of these things is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence. women who take an instinctive pleasure in their children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family. artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their own work seems good to them. but there are many humbler forms of the same kind of pleasure. many men who spend their working life in the city devote their weekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens, and when the spring comes, they experience all the joys of having created beauty.

the whole subject of happiness has, in my opinion, been treated too solemnly. it had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of life or a religion. perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory may need a better theory to help them to recovery, just as you may need a tonic when you have been ill. but when things are normal a man should be healthy without a tonic and happy without a theory. it is the simple things that really matter. if a man delights in his wife and children, has success in work, and finds pleasure in the alternation of day and night, spring and autumn, he will be happy whatever his philosophy may be. if, on the other hand, he finds his wife fateful, his childrens noise unendurable, and the office a nightmare; if in the daytime he longs for night, and at night sighs for the light of day, then what he needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen----a different diet, or more exercise, or what not.

man is an animal, and his happiness depends on his physiology more than he likes to think. this is a humble conclusion, but i cannot make myself disbelieve it. unhappy businessmen, i am convinced, would increase their happiness more by walking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy.

good afternoon,ladies and gentlemen!

i’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic isopportunities and challenges.

other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by theolympic games that cannot be seen directly. for example, more and more peoplewill get to know china. i’m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attractthem strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness ofenvironmental protection is being strengthened.

what is more, olympic games givea unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youthwith the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so manyadvances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?

i’ve already said a lot about the olympics and china. but i think everyoneshould use some time to think of this question,”does the olympic games have anyspecial meaning to you?”

for us,i mean the chinese youth. because what we are waiting for is to dosomething significant as repaying the love given to us society is just like aship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”hey! comehere and take the helm! ”how charming his voice is,but we have never heard ofit in our true life. this morning, however, when we wake up,we will see theolympic games waving its hand. after chewing, most of us will have at least oneplan about what to do for the olympic games. and mine is to be a “comforter”----that is someone who will give comfort to others.

at the end of my speech,i hope all the preparation will go well, andeveryone will show their ability to the world. let us seize opportunities andgive a big smile to challenges.

用英语演讲,不要用太多 i feel, i think,老是用i,显得十分主观,狭隘。

比如:you should not smoke.

其中 of the people, by the people, for the people(民有,民治,民享)已成为不朽佳句。

we have lived in lida school for more than one year. i enjoy all the time here because it can bring me a lot of things such as feelings, knowledge and other things i need.

there are many trees and flowers around us. the trees are green all the year. when we sit in the classroom and look out of the windows, we can see a big tree shaking its strong arms to us. it is really wonderful.

in some ways, our thoughts are at large. perhaps it makes our brains creative. i believe that nothing can tie up my mind even it stands for authority. the free life is just like our school life.

in our school, of course, there are both success and failure. we should not be proud but modest because there are too many people much better than myself. actually, we also should muster up courage and work harder.

i like

“we are honest.

we always keep promises.

we often think a lot.

we are never afraid of anything.”

so we have our own school life different from others.

at last, it is impossible for me to resist the temptation to say: what a perfect school life i have!

thanksgiving day is the most truly american of the national holidays in the united states and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

in 1620, the settlers, or pilgrims, they sailed to america on the may flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. after a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy november, what is now plymouth, massachusetts.

during their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics. those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

all summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the coming harvest. finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. and therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the lord be fixed. years later, president of the united states proclaimed the fourth thursday of november as thanksgiving day every year. the celebration of thanksgiving day has been observed on that date until today.

the pattern of the thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. the big family dinner is planned months ahead. on the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. there will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. the best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. they have been the most traditional and favorite food on thanksgiving day throughout the years.

everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. but as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to get a consensus on[4] the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird.

thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year" s bounty and reverently ask for continued[5] blessings.

red:rehabilitated?now let me see. you know,i don't have any idea what that means.

parole official:well,it means that you're ready to rejoin society.

red:i know what you think it means, sonny. to me it's just a made up word;a politician's word. so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit, and tie,and have a job. what do you really want to know?am i sorry for what i did?

parole official:well,are you?

red:there's not a day goes by i don't feel regret. not because i'm in here,or because you think i should. i look back on the way i was then then,a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. i want to talk to him. i want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. but i can't. that kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. i got to live with that. rehabilitated?it's just a bullshit word. so you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. because to tell you the truth,i don't give a shit.

we were further cautioned today that perhaps these proceedings ought to be delayed because certainly there would be new evidence forthcoming from the president of the united states. there has not even been an obfuscated indication that this committee would receive any additional materials from the president. the committee subpoena is outstanding, and if the president wants to supply that material, the committee sits here. the fact is that on yesterday, the american people waited with great anxiety for eight hours, not knowing whether their president would obey an order of the supreme court of the united states.

at this point, i would like to juxtapose a few of the impeachment criteria with some of the actions the president has engaged in. impeachment criteria: james madison, from the virginia ratification convention. "if the president be connected in any suspicious manner with any person and there be grounds to believe that he will shelter him, he may be impeached."

we have heard time and time again that the evidence reflects the payment to defendants money. the president had knowledge that these funds were being paid and these were funds collected for the 1972 presidential campaign. we know that the president met with mr. henry petersen 27 times to discuss matters related to watergate, and immediately thereafter met with the very persons who were implicated in the information mr. petersen was receiving. the words are: "if the president is connected in any suspicious manner with any person and there be grounds to believe that he will shelter that person, he may be impeached."
